Files from an Archive
In the age of technology, certain objects have become obsolete and are considered to be going out of style. Unfortunately, one of these things includes the family photo album. Looking at these albums and the images within them evoke feelings of nostalgia and wistfulness. They serve as passages into memories that have been buried within. They are places where temporalities are allowed to collide. In this project, I photographed images from my family’s archive and photo albums with a focus on the people that raised me as well as the places that did the same. Portugal and its culture has always been a big part of my life. My family and I have spent entire summers there; I don’t think that I would be the same if we didn’t. Going on trips to Fatima, and Buscao or just spending time by my grandparents’ pool are all things that shaped me as a person as well as helping me learn about my history. The visual aspects that are featured within work are meant to aid the viewer in understanding the work as a whole. By highlighting certain parts of the images, creating double exposures to create a sense of motion and movement, and using brown-tinted lighting, all come together to create this piece. The image itself and the layers of the photo album, and the plastic on the physical photograph also emphasize the materiality of the entire project. This materiality also adds a layer of nostalgia into the project as well since in our technology based society, we see images at faster paces and never physically feel or look at them.
